city of craft

Above is the illustration that I submitted to the City of Craft swag bag contest, and - hooray! I won!

They will be printing my design on cotton totes to give away to the first 100 people who enter the sale, you lucky ducks.

Because I live in Montreal, I don't think I'll be able to make it down, but if you're in the Toronto area, you should definitely stop by. The list of vendors looks amazing!

The little etsy shop that could - coucou salut - made the front page of etsy this morning. Those are my little Pin Light cushion covers there in the upper-left corner.

In honor of this momentous event, I would like to offer readers of this blog FREE SHIPPING on any of my pillows, excluding sale items! Yay! Just state the code NOEFP when you check out. Offer available until Sunday, November 22nd, enjoy!

A shout out and big thanks to The Screaming Needle for creating this beautiful treasury!

Mary & Max

I've just discovered the trailer for Mary & Max, the new movie by Adam Elliot, of Harvie Krumpet fame.

I'm a huge fan of Harvie Krumpet, and absolutely cannot wait to see his next movie.

His characters are just so amazing and earnest, and I'm positive that it will make me cry against my will - always the sign of a good movie.

I think Tim Burton has been through neighborhood...I found this a few doors down today.

cloud

I found this little cloud when I lopped off the top of yesterday's dinner squash.

I'm always amazed at how perfect nature can be.

decanted

striped decanter 2, originally uploaded by shannylea.

On my most recent thrifting expedition, I scored this beautiful striped glass decanter set.

I'm a bit of a sucker for these little decanters and glasses - I think I own about 4 of them at this point. This one is my current favorite by far - it's so simple and elegant.

I'm going to have to buy a fancy beverage to decant out of it...what does one drink out of those tiny glasses, anyway?

I mean, other than the nectar of the gods, obviously.

new hairs

be brave, originally uploaded by shannylea.

It's no secret that I've moved around a lot. Apartments, cities, countries, you name it. After awhile, you kind of get used to the rhythm of it, all except for one thing (warning, vanity ahead): I HATE trying to find a new hairdresser.

Typically, once I finally do hunt someone amazing down, I only get one appointment before they

a) take stress leave
b) quit
c) disappear on me (all except Nathan. Oh Nathan, I'm sorry I left you, you still have my heart).

So, all of this moving around and vanity stress has lead me to where I am now: I've been cutting my own bangs for over a year now, dyeing my own hair for a few years and growing it out for over 6 months.

In all honestly, after watching SO many hairdressers cut my bangs, only to result in me going home to correct them myself, I'm getting pretty good at achieving what I want. The same rules apply for the home hair dyeing kit. The fancy stuff in salons? I don't think it's so fancy. And besides, I usually have to convince them to go as dark as I want. It's MY HAIR, people. I shouldn't have to debate the issue.

So here it is: my look for fall 2009. And my advice: when it comes to your hair - be brave, people, be brave.

As an aside, I have to commend Anna from Door Sixteen for her recent post in which she lists Adobe Photoshop as part of her beauty regime. Oh hells ya, I Photoshopped the crappers out of my bags.

peep toe

peep toe, originally uploaded by shannylea.

I've finally gotten around to editing some of the photos that I took this summer (!), while on my annual trip home to Saskatchewan.

One of my favorite things to do while I'm home (in addition to attending as many garage sales as is humanly possible) is exploring abandoned farm houses and ghost towns.

The above picture was taken in the old general store/post office at Bents, Saskatchewan.

It's always so strange to wander around these abandoned spaces - there is often so much left behind. It always makes you wonder what happened to the people who lived and worked there, and what made them just drop what they were doing one day, lock the door and walk away.

There is so much of Saskatchewan's forgotten past contained in these buildings. It's hard not to take thousands of photographs.

You can view the whole set on my flickr page.
